Nugget – March 5, 2013
When we moved into our house 15 plus years ago, we told Jazmin that she could get a cat. Nugget has been part of our family since. This was shot in March 2009, with the “ring flash” adapter mentioned in yesterdays post about the rusty pennies. If you notice the unique “catch light’ in Nuggets eyes its light a circle of light. The camera lens is in the middle of this circle, or ring of light. If you also notice, there are not really any shadows behind Nugget, and the light “falls” of quickly, so most things behind the subject are dark. Rusty Penny? – March 4, 2013
YES! What you see is rust on a penny. During World War II copper went to the war effort to make weapons. 1943 pennies are steel, and thus can rust. Only forty 1943 copper-alloy cents are known to remain in existence. Coin experts speculate that they were struck by accident when copper-alloy 1-cent blanks remained in the press hopper when production began on the new steel pennies. These rannge in value from $275,000.00 to upwards of 1 million dollars. I have 4 steel ones, slightly rusty if anyones interested!
I purchased an adapter to take a 580EX Canon Speedlight, and turn it into a “ring flash”. This is very good for close up, or macro photography with its very even lighting. Its also quite useful for shooting models, as the light “wraps” around them for even lighting, with rapid fall off. Canon 30D, ISO-200, F8, 1/200 sec, EF 100mm Macro Lens, 580EX Speedlight with “ring flash” adapter attached. Camera mounted on my Bogen tripod.
